We can now add PFAS contamination to the long list of ways the oil and gas industry is harming the health of New Mexicans.

They are hiding behind their “trade secrets” loophole while they inject thousands of pounds of PFAS into New Mexico’s land and water to aid in the fracking process.

Just one tablespoon of PFAS is enough make the entire Elephant Butte Reservoir too toxic to drink, increasing the risk of cancer, impairing the immune system and causing developmental disorders, and passing from mothers into their babies.

Once our water is contaminated, these forever chemicals are extremely difficult to remove, and they don’t break down over time. Instead they accumulate in our land and water, and in our bodies and cause disease and illness.

On Tuesday, November 12th -Friday 15th the Oil Conservation Commission will hold a hearing on a proposed rule to prohibit the use of PFAS in fracking operations in New Mexico, and to require oil and gas companies to certify that they have disclosed all of the chemicals they are injecting underground. Please raise your voice to tell them to protect New Mexico from PFAS!
