In 2023, in Eddy County NM, a waste truck accident leaked toxic oil and gas “produced water” into the beautiful Black River.

This is home to the Texas Hornshell, an endangered and rare freshwater mussel, the last native mussel species left in New Mexico.

Clean up for this spill lingered into January of this year (2025) and the case finally closed in February.

But what exactly was spilled into the Black River?

Laws in New Mexico let companies keep chemicals a secret. 🤐
