We're back with the first Leak of the Week of 2025!
🛢️Can you guess how much toxic oil and gas yuck was spilled in 2024 in the fastest growing oil state in the USA? One million gallons? Two million? If you guessed over 4.1 million gallons -- you're right!
Over 100 oil and gas companies reported spills to state officials in 2024, but only 10 of these companies are responsible for over half of all spills. Check out the last Leak of the Week to find out which companies were the Top 10 spillers of 2024. Companies spill everything from chemicals to crude oil, but the fluid spilled the most in 2024 was oil and gas waste called "produced water."
This New Mexico legislative session, legislators will consider a bill to pull "produced water" out of the oilfields for use as an "alternative water supply." There are a lot of problems with this idea that we'll explain more in the coming weeks.
