Take action! We have the opportunity to ban PFAs and undisclosed chemicals in oil and gas drilling in NM.
Hearing Tuesday Nov 12-15th!
Please email commissioners at link in bio and raise your voice in public comment.
👉Through venting and flaring, undisclosed chemicals are being released into the air that New Mexicans breathe. The health risks of PFAs have been well documented.
👉Forever chemicals can move quickly through the environment, making contamination hard to contain. They can move into aquifers, drinking water sources, our crops and food.
👉So far in 2024, there have been 1156 oil and gas spills,
We do not even know what chemicals are in these spills because they are currently kept as proprietary “trade secrets.”
We need to know what chemicals are seeping into our soils and waterways and hold companies accountable.
🏆 What if we gave awards for big polluters? Ones like EOG Resources, whose nearly 1,500 oil and gas spills this year include 800 gallons of toxic wastewater on public land in Eddy, County, NM in June.
This is EOG's second appearance for Leak of the Week, and not just because the company is a chronic spiller...We discovered in EOG's 2023 Sustainability Report that they have "proprietary leak detection software" for preventing spills, but this technology hasn't seemed to prevent the 1,480 barrels of toxic spills reported by the company so far in 2024.
EOG's spill in June happened when a production tank overflowed, which the company alleges is exactly the kind of thing that is prevented by its spill prevention system. Spills contain chemicals, and right now in New Mexico, oil and gas companies don't have to disclose all the chemicals they use. EOG is part of a case we're arguing this week to change that.
There's still time to sign up for public comment and help stop toxic chemicals from damaging communities. Just click the link in our bio or DM @nmclimatejustice -- see you next week!
